Dear Renters,

Support HB2254 and contact your legislator.

HB2254 – Municipal Tax Exemption Rental Residential will phase out and ultimately eliminate sales tax (or Transaction Privilege Tax – TPT) on residential renters.

You might be surprised to know that Arizona and Alaska are the only two states that allow their cities and towns to impose sales tax on renters. This tax was found to be unfair and tossed out by the state in 1977. Starting in the 1980’s cities and towns started imposing this tax on their renter residents as a new revenue source.

Approximately 1/3 of Arizona residents rent their homes and those residents also pay the same taxes as homeowners (property tax, garbage fees, water fees and utility taxes included in the monthly rent) and in many jurisdictions they are also subjected to a regressive and unfair tax on rent. It is unfair for cities and towns to balance their budgets on the backs of renters, cities need to develop tax policies that are fair to all their residents and stop picking winners and losers.

Shelter is the most basic human need and it should not be taxed!

We now have an opportunity to eliminate this tax but your help is needed:
